Natural Insomnia Treatment Secrets

Insomnia can be one of the most frustrating conditions. Why? Because after a consistent lack of sleep it is hard to stay mentally sane. You become more agitated, more stressed, more depressed, more anxious, and sometimes end up with even more complications as a result.

In most cases, insomnia itself is not an ailment, rather it is the symptom of another medical problem and should be treated as such. While there are many over the counter medications available in just about every drug store they only provide a quick fix to falling asleep. Medications may be successful as an insomnia treatment in the short term, but if used for periods beyond a few days they can cause side effects that may cause other health problems.

The majority of over the counter insomnia treatment products are not intended for long-term use and they can interfere with your daily activities by not allowing you to have a full night of restful sleep. Some of the common side effects of an over the counter insomnia treatment include:

* Dizziness
* Forgetfulnes
* Constipation
* Dry mouth
* Dry throat

These medications often don't work for insomnia and can cause adverse side effects if you have insomnia because they include antihistamines, which are typically used for treatments of allergies. Yes these medications do cause drowsiness, but that is not enough to get you a full eight to ten hours of sleep every night.

Extended use of any drugs as an insomnia treatment may cause the development of drug tolerance, requiring a larger dose to have the same effect, and it may also cause a dependency on the sleep aid. Some sleeping pills may also have a negative drug interaction with other drugs and after long-term use may cause withdrawal symptoms when their use is ended.

I hope you are getting the message. Unless you have severe insomnia, have tried natural methods, and are currently on medication that does truly help you sleep, don't take medication for insomnia.

Learn Natural Ways To Help You Improve Your Quality Of Sleep

If stress is causing your sleep loss, finding ways to deal with the stress will offer more in the way of insomnia treatment than sleeping pills will. Try learning breathing techniques, such as meditation and other mental practices to help you reduce stress.

Make your environment more conducive to sleep such as dark curtains over the windows if your schedule calls for going to bed before it gets dark. Most insomnia treatment suggestions revolve around changes in lifestyle such as:
* Avoiding alcohol
* Avoiding caffeine
* Avoiding food and drinks that may cause indigestion

What About Sleep Walk Reversal?

Additionally, some people may suffer from a sleep-wake reversal, especially if they have been traveling or have been working a shift other than traditional day shift. In some cases resetting the internal circadian clock by working throughout the day in bright lights and going to bed in the dark is all the insomnia treatment needed to get back on a regular sleep schedule.

If you suffer from insomnia my fist suggestion is to ask yourself what might be causing it, depression, anxiety, stress? Then try to naturally deal with those problems in order to deal with the insomnia. Don't just turn to sleeping medications as they only mask the problem and in many cases make it worse.

Help with chronic insomnia, trouble falling asleep for over a decade.? (Answers: 2) (Comments: 0)
I am 16, and for as long as I can remember I have had extreme difficulty falling asleep. Once asleep I have no problems maintaining in this state, though the vast majority of nights I'm awake to see the sun rise even if I attempt to sleep prior to sundown. In fact, last night I had attempt to sleep at ~10:00pm and have been awake since (it is now 11:00am). The problem is not that I do not become tired, I have been tired for years. I simply can not fall asleep, even after consuming large doses of sleep aids such as Diphenhydromine (I have taken over 500mg at times, over 10x the recommended dose), Dramamine, 5-HTP, L-tryptophan, melatonin, and serotonin over extend periods of time. Often I maintain a "semi"-sleep state throughout the night, it is more related to rest then sleep. I am conscious of my surroundings though I will sometimes have 'light' dreams and will feel slightly rested compared to a typical night. Recently all of these problems have become more frequent and sever. I have gone days without sleep and am beginning to fear for my health and mental well being. I have experienced mild hallucinations and degenerating cognitive ability, though both are rare. Until recently (past couple of months) I was a very active person and I'm still in great shape, I have played Football since 6th grade as a offensive tackle and defensive end. I moved recently so I was unable to continue in the athletics program though I don't think that it has much to do with my problem as I have struggled with it for over a decade. I am have started training in MMA (BJJ and Mauy-Thai) as well so I am positive that physical activity is not the problem (BTW, I'm 6'3" @ ~185lbs.) I do not spend excess time in bed when not attempting to sleep either. I doubt that it is a dietary problem and I don't suffer from any kind of aches or pains during the night. I maintain a comfortable temperature in my room and my bedding is comfortable as well. I have no idea as to what the problem could be, I have spent a large amount of time researching insomnia treatment and have tried nearly all of them save going to a physician/sleep specialist. Please excuse any grammatical or spelling errors, I'm sure you can understand the reason for such mistakes given my situation.

Marijuanna for insomnia treatment? (Answers: 13) (Comments: 0)
I have dealt with dehabilitating insomnia for over 5 years. Since I have been pregnant, it has magically dissapeared (Thank God!!) and I feel pretty great. I'm kind of worried about it returning after the birth of my daughter. I used to be on all kinds of prescribed drugs to help me sleep, but the in turn almost ruined my life. I was a walking zombie, addicted to multiple antidepressents and sleep inducers. After going through a horrible withdrawal period from all these drugs, I told myself I would never do it again. Years ago, for a short time, I made a marijuanna tea at night to help me sleep. It was wonderful! It worked like a charm, and I would wake up feeling great. I stopped because my dr said I should, and that's when I started getting prescribed all the pills. So I'm kind of thinking about revisiting that therapy in case it does come back later in life. I know I can expect a variety of answers here, and I welcome them all! What do you guys think of this idea? Pro's: No addiction, no tar in lungs (since it's in tea form), no pills to take, very effective Cons: It's illegal (big one!) **The birth control pill theory is very interesting to me, I'll have to test that theory out after the birth of the baby! **For the one who wanted to know how the tea was made with marijuanna--it was extracted with a fat (butter) and then put in some sleepytime tea. Trust me-it worked! **I definately don't agree with letting my dr's prescribe me all those pills because "he knew better." I would rather not take anything and suffer than go through that again. **I do agree that it would set a bad example for my daughter. That is also one of the reasons why I stopped before (I have another daughter). **Those with severe insomnia know that Tylenol pm does not work. It's a catch 22 for me. Like, are multitudes of pills better, or is a simple herbal tea better? In the end I probably won't do it, it was just an idea in my head. Thanks for all your info and opinions though. My goodness Dr. Phil--I think you need to calm down. You can tell me your opinion rationally instead of crazy. I listen to all sides. BTW-It not like I smoked joints in front of my daughter, when I did it, I was simply just drinking some tea out of a cup 15 minutes before I went to bed. (Not that it makes it any better, I know, but I just wanted everyone to know that.)
